What Is 925 Silver – And Why It’s So Special?
If you’ve ever shopped for quality silver jewelry, you’ve probably come across the term “925 silver” or “sterling silver.” But what does that actually mean – and why should you care?
Let’s break it down.
What does "925" mean?
The number 925 refers to the purity of the silver. Pure silver (also known as fine silver) is 99.9% silver – but it’s far too soft to use for everyday jewelry. To make it durable enough for rings, necklaces, earrings, and bracelets, it’s mixed with a small amount of another metal, usually copper.
So 925 silver is made up of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals – that’s where the name comes from. This combination keeps the beautiful, bright look of silver, while adding enough strength for everyday wear.
Why is 925 silver special?
925 sterling silver strikes the perfect balance between luxury and practicality. It’s:
-
Strong enough to last a lifetime with proper care
-
Hypoallergenic (great for sensitive skin)
-
Highly versatile – it can be textured, polished, oxidized, or shaped by hand
-
Naturally beautiful – with a soft shine that pairs effortlessly with other materials like gemstones or gold
Unlike cheaper silver-plated jewelry, 925 silver is solid all the way through – which means it won’t chip or wear off over time. And if it tarnishes (which is natural), a quick polish brings it back to life.
